HERE’S THE BEST AGE FOR MOTHERHOOD ACCORDING TO SCIENCE

California came to a conclusion that giving birth after 35 does not only have positive impact on the baby but on the mother as well i.e. having a baby after 35 improves the mother’s mental abilities. This conclusion was a result of tests performed on 830 postmenopausal women and showed that women who had their baby at later age gained better verbal memory and cognition.

The reason for this is the surge of hormones – estrogen and progesterone. Namely, it has been found that these hormones have positive effect on the brain chemistry and function among women who had later age pregnancy.

We are quite aware that there are some things which cannot be planned when having a baby but there is much to be said about the life experience a woman has gained as well as about her maturity.

At later age, women are usually professionally and financially settled and they have learnt how to handle stressful situations (having a baby is considered a stressful situation as well). Therefore, even though there are still existing risks associated with having a baby after 35 and can be regarded as a disadvantage, there are also many advantages that need to be carefully taken into account.

Firstly, the mental health of women at later age is usually in better shape than of those who are about to enter adulthood and have not settled professionally in their career yet. This means that younger mothers face more life challenges and worry more about things besides raising a baby than elderly mothers.

Older mothers tend to be more accepting of the newly created situation which gives a sense of calmness and excitement, rather than a sense of worry and anxiety which is common for younger mothers who face more challenges above all in their professional life.

Secondly, the change of hormones due to having a baby has also had incredibly positive influence on older women who face lack of estrogen and progesterone. Thus, women who have a baby later in life often make this decision by choice and embrace the responsibilities of motherhood in a more prepared and organized way.

They are aware of the pregnancy risks but they tend to see their doctor more frequently and pay more attention to their doctor’s advice so that they would make sure that their pregnancy is complication free. Unlike younger mothers-to-be who are sometimes less attentive when it comes to following directions and understanding the long-term complications of pregnancy.

Pregnancy is one of the things people cannot predict especially, how it will turn out. There are pros and cons related to pregnancy at any stage of life but it seems that older women might find certain benefit from later life pregnancies especially if they have already become familiar with this process and had children at younger years.

Therefore, all things considered, if you are planning a pregnancy or suddenly find yourself faced with pregnancy at later age, make sure you see you doctor more often and follow his advice on looking after your health as well as the baby’s in the best possible way.
