Learn How To Prepare a Homemade Onion cake, Step by Step and Super Economical

The onion cake is a pretty neat and simple recipe anyone can make. It requires no previous experience, and contains easily available ingredients you may already have at home. Here’s what you need to do:

You will need:

  • Puff pastry pie
  • 6 onions
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 100 gr. parmesan (grated)
  • 3 eggs
  • 100 ml. sour cream or milk
  • A pinch of nutmeg powder
  • A pinch of salt and pepper

Method of preparation:

Follow the steps below to prepare the cake:

Take a 25-cm. diameter pan, then grease it with some butter, sprinkle some flour and line it with the puff pastry pie and set it aside. If you’d like to prepare your own cake top, you can see a recipe below. Now, in another saucepan, fry the chopped onions on olive oil until they turn transparent. Leave the onions to cool down – they should be tender as they’ll serve as the base for the cake.

Crack the eggs and whisk them in another bowl, then add the sour cream, salt, pepper and nutmeg and beat for a few minutes more. Add the onions and parmesan in this mixture, then stir everything well until it’s combined. Now, pour the batter in the previously prepared pan and cover it with grated parmesan or slices of mozzarella. You can also cover the cake with a lid, but we like it more open. Put the cake in a pre-heated oven and cook for 40 minutes at 180 C. Take it out in the end, leave it to cool down, then cut it and serve.

If you want to make your own cake top without using the puff pastry pie, here’s the recipe:

You will need:

  • 400 gr. white flour
  • 1 egg
  • 50 gr. butter
  • A teaspoon of salt
  • Water

Method of preparation

Put the flour in a bowl and make a hole in the center, then crack open the egg and pour it inside. Add the salt and butter next, then knead everything well until you get a dough. Add some water to make a compact mass. Leave the dough to rise for about an hour, then separate it in two and stretch it to match the shape of the cake pan. Line the inside of the pan with it, then pour the onion mix over it and bake for 40 minutes on 180 C. Bon appetite!
